The starting point of whatever this is supposed to be.
The year is 2026, and I struggle with sharing “knowledge”
[1] Knowledge in the most broad sense of the word.
[1].
As an academic, I strive to share my findings through academic papers. As a computer scientist, this is done through repos. As a colleague, I spam share interesting links in the #random Slack channel. As a friend, I do so through Discord. As a teammate, I do so through WhatsApp. Besides that, I also have unshared knowledge in the form of open tabs, bookmarks, files, etc. And knowledge that’s hard to share, such as thoughts and experiences.
A problem arises whenever I try to revisit any knowledge that’s not directly in my memory. Sure, I can filter out where to look, but there is considerable overlap between several topics. And if I can recollect it, it might still be difficult to share immediately.
As a PhD student, I’ve got a lot of different things going on. Right now, there are 4 papers that are in the pipeline, teaching assistant duties for a handful of courses, and half a dozen project/thesis students. Additionally, there are a few events that need to be organized, such as the CTF, Game Jam, or Dag van de Wetenschap. Don’t forget the little side projects I enjoy working on to keep my sanity. Not only is it impossible to work on everything every day, but it has also proven difficult to share information or knowledge between syncs, especially when these may be weeks apart.
There have been several attempts by me to get me to share knowledge more consistently: Obsidian, writing documentation, a personal “Mike’s Spam” channel, etc. All have their own pros and cons. Most have not worked out as I expected. This is the next attempt, and this post is for transparency and to make sure there is some black on white proof that I failed this attempt as well [*] fail fast!(?) [*].
So, the goal of this blog/knowledge base would be to get a place where I can order anything I feel like sharing with the world [*] or myself? Some private pages would be a nice feature. [*]. Additionally, for my side projects, getting to share those results (if there are any) and getting like a journal are more valuable than keeping them to myself, and might even motivate me to finish them more often.
That’s the idea. The goal would be to get some semi-frequent updates on here by the end of 2026, hopefully without too much lost knowledge.
